Re: NXC: program blocks caused by PlayTones()

Post by HaWe »

I just encountered the same issue when adding a PlayTones(...) to Davic Gilday's Mindcuber for debugging reasons:

If I insert this command quite at the end of his code, it seems the turn table doesn't execute turn(8) any more, and the program blocks....
while cheaping a very high frequent sqeaking noise (presumably 12 kHz)

...at least temporarily for several minutes as I now observed ...!!! (3 times it unexpectedly continued again after about 5-10 minutes !)

Code: Select all

//**

//*SNIP*

  if (solved)  {
      PlayTones(ChordUp); // <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
      turn(8);
  }

Re: NXC: program blocks caused by PlayTones()

Post by afanofosc »

Perhaps this is caused by buggy array initialization:

Code: Select all

//**
  Tone ChordUp[] = {TONE_C4, 50, TONE_E4, 50, TONE_G4, 50,
    TONE_C5, 50, TONE_E5, 50, TONE_G5, 50, TONE_C6, 200};
//**
This happens to work in simple cases. Perhaps it doesn't work quite right and causes bad things to happen in more complex situations?

Try properly initializing the array with Tone structures at runtime rather than using a technically invalid static initialization. You could also try copying the PlayTones function from NXCDefs.h and call it TestPlayTones in your own code and then try it with safecall or inline and see if it changes this behavior. I will need you to track down the problem while I focus on EV3 support, okay?

ok, thank you, it's not an urgent issue anyway.

But just for my understanding and out of interest - you wrote
properly initializing the array with Tone structures at runtime rather than using a technically invalid static initialization
is there anything syntactically wrong in the source code ? Or do you mean "going wrong" on compiler or firmware level?
(I currently use a small library of pre-defined melodies like ChordUp, ChordDown, Buzz, Beep, BeepError a.s.o. .)

As you can see, the initialization of ChordUp is not an array of Tone structures. It is just a flat array of values. There isn't a way to correctly statically initialize an array of structures with the current compiler - if I recall correctly. But you can use ArrayBuild with several temporary Tone structures to build an array at run time with the right Tone structures in it. Or you could ArrayInit an array with a Tone structure as the initial value that has zero values and then iterate through the array and set the correct tone and duration values in each Tone structure contained within the array. I have no idea if that is what is causing the problem. And that is why I am hoping you will at least try to diagnose it on your own. It should be quite simple to do but I am way behind on EV3 stuff so I really would prefer not to divert my attention to this issue.

ok, thank you, now I understand.
Building all those melodies in runtime is too complicated IMO.
I think then I'd better write an own PlayMelody function which is able to use a 1-dim array by Playtone(array, array[i+1]) and see what's happening then.

ps
I meanwhile checked the issue in your doxygen help and surprisingly found that you're still providing exactly the same code which I have been using so far -
would you maybe wish to update this source?
ex_playtones.nxc
This is an example of how to use the PlayTones function along with the Tone structure.

Tone sweepUp[] = {TONE_C4, MS_50, TONE_E4, MS_50, TONE_G4, MS_50,TONE_C5, MS_50, TONE_E5, MS_50, TONE_G5, MS_50, TONE_C6, MS_200};

task main()
{
PlayTones(sweepUp);
Wait(SEC_1);
}

update:
the following code runs fine without any issues:

Code: Select all

int ChordUp[] = {TONE_C4, 50, TONE_E4, 50, TONE_G4, 50,
  TONE_C5, 50, TONE_E5, 50, TONE_G5, 50, TONE_C6, 200};
int ChordDn[] = {TONE_C6, 50, TONE_G5, 50, TONE_E5, 50,
  TONE_C5, 50, TONE_G4, 50, TONE_E4, 50,  TONE_C4, 200};
int Chord[] = {TONE_C4, 50, TONE_E4, 50, TONE_G4, 50, TONE_C5, 50};
int Beep[] = {TONE_C5, 200};
int BeepBeep[] = {TONE_C5, 200 , 0, 100, TONE_C5, 200};
int Blip[] = {TONE_C7, 10 };
int BlipBlip[] = {TONE_C7, 10, 0, 20, TONE_C7, 10 };
int Buzz[] = {220, 200 };
int sdError[] = {TONE_C4, 50, 0, 50, TONE_C4, 50, 0, 50, TONE_C4, 50};

void PlayMelody( int melody[] ) {
  int l=SizeOf(melody)/2;
  for (int i=0; i<l-1; i+=2) {
     PlayTone(melody[i], melody[i+1]);
     Wait(melody[i+1]);
  }
}

  //  *SNIP*

  PlayMelody(ChordUp);

  //  *SNIP*
Although it's already running fine, it even could be made thread-safe by

Code: Select all

safecall void PlayMelody( int melody[] )
share and enjoy! ^^

It looks like at some point I enabled support for simple structure static initialization. Can you see if with this simple change the hanging trouble goes away? I.e., put { and } around the frequency and duration values as shown below:

Code: Select all

Tone sweepUp[] = {
  { TONE_C4, MS_50 },
  { TONE_E4, MS_50 },
  { TONE_G4, MS_50 },
  { TONE_C5, MS_50 },
  { TONE_E5, MS_50 },
  { TONE_G5, MS_50 },
  { TONE_C6, MS_200 }
};

task main()
{
  PlayTones(sweepUp);
  Wait(SEC_1);
}

at the first attempt: no trouble any more (tried with the mindcuber program) ! :)

Excellent news. I will update the online help for this function to show the correct array initialization technique.
