any offroad kits?

Wondering if there are any technic kits I could use with NXT to power an off road robot. Doesn't need to climb mountains or anything like that but be able to drive around in the back yard.

I would think its a matter of parts more over than any one kit. There are many kits that may help you in design and parts. A few things to think about is "gear it down", give it ground clearance. Keep it simple and light. One thing though most of the "trial trucks" are just PF powered and control. 2x4 is ALOT easier to make than a 4x4.

If you are looking at what is for sale today at Lego. Not alot for a good off roader, the main parts is finding BIG wheels, that is tall anyway, wide looks good but are harder to turn weigh alot more. The motor bike wheels are super and the old RCX ones as well. they are tall yet narrow. I would get the new Educational recources kit at lego ed. It looks very good you get over 800 parts and in there is 4 of those tall wheels, gears(many) just a great all around parts kit if you say only have a NXT 2.0 or less(1.0). its under 100$ and you have a great selection of rather rare parts too.

Try google search, or lego gallery, look at well design or funny creations, and experiment (a lot!), build your own solutions, and share your results!

8297 Is from a few years back and its even getting expensive 200+$(new in a box will be even more)
8466 Is very out of date and is a collectors item today even a used one is hard to find under 350$. this set is over 10years old now? I know i would love to have this kit just for the wheels but the cost of this is just way to much, if the OP is in the EU it may be cheeper as finding this kit in the USA is very hard today. shipping this very heavy kit over seas will be very costly as well.

Not that these are bad choices but you wont get one from Lego. also a kit that is over 10 years old will have age issues.

Not sure as the OP never stated a cost he would be willing to spend , but I know for many today, kids more over, spending 300+ on a technic kit is alot of cash. Other issues is yo need to be 18 and over to buy at bricklink or have a parent do the purchase.

If you look up "Lego trial trucks" you find so much that it will take a week just to see them all.

Note the use of wheels from the Exo-force Mobile Devastator (set #8108). Like doc222 recommends, they give good ground clearance and are simple/lightweight.
