I'd just get a NXT to PF converter cable and plug it into the PF battery pack.
will it be able to receive IR like the PF IR reliever does?
i want to control a motor by sending an IR beam from a single channel transmitter that is controlled from the NXT brick. i am using the same power output since the battery pack only has 1 output jack.
the motor i am using is the LEGO Mini-motor (these are 2x2x3 studs excluding the 9 volt ,4 stud technic cable.)
will this sensor work with just powering it from a battery?

That is an I2C sensor to receive PF IR commands from the PF remotes. It is for use specifically with the NXT, as a sensor. It's so that the NXT can be RCed by PF remote.
