Display on NXT not working

Hello. I am new to this forum, so if this is not the right topic then the mods can lock this.
Anyways, after not using my NXT for a while, I have returned to using it. However, whenever I turn it on, the "turning on" sound will work, but it the screen will only show random lines. I found a way to fix this online by soldering part of the daughterboard with a soldering iron. This fixed the problem for a day, but now it's come back. What should I do?

You can try:
  • Replace batteries
  • Make sure you soldered it good
  • Check youtube, because i saw the same problem there.

It is usually a problem with some surface mount capacitors on the back of the screens board. You can usually solve the problem by re-soldering them. If you don't have access to a soldering iron or you feel your skills aren't quite sufficient (remember, fail this and the screen quits :)) then print out the linked page and pictures and take your NXT and the pages to someone you feel is knowledge-able about these things. I'm sure that they would love to help you and you can always give them a little bit for their help. [LINK]

You can check to make sure it is the screen that quite using a tool called NeXTScreen. If you can see your screen as normal on your computer using the tool but the screen on the NXT doesn't display anything then it is most likely the screen.

-EDIT- Doh! Sorry, I must have somehow glazed over most of your post. Coffee anyone? I think I'll have two cups... Anyways, sorry for answering what you'd already figured out. I'm sure that the NeXTScreen tool will help though.

I had a similar problem:
sound and short start screen, then just lines or snow or nothing at all. Resetting had no effect.

I didn't open the NXT brick in order not to effect warranty issues and sent it to lego support.
Although I didn't have the receipt any more (it once was a gift) Lego sent me a new one back without charge.
:D

Yes, I have heard many cases of LEGO just giving you a new NXT for free, even without a receipt.

I saw an article on brickset saying that the LEGO group will replace any NXT with a faulty display.
Does your NXT have a faulty display?

Do you own an NXT 'Intelligent Brick' with a flickery or non-working display? Steven Canvin, LEGO's Community Manager for LEGO MINDSTORMS, has asked us to pass on this message -

"Unfortunately, some of the NXT Intelligent Bricks manufactured in-between 2006 and early 2008, may have a faulty display, resulting in a flickering or non-working display.

"LEGO Corporate Management has decided that any NXT Intelligent Brick manufactured with this malfunction of the display will have an extended guarantee beyond the standard guarantee. The LEGO Group offers to replace NXT Intelligent Bricks with the above-mentioned faulty display.

"The NXT Intelligent Bricks would be found in:
o Retail set 8527 (version 1.0 and 1.1)
o LEGO Education set 9797
o Item 9841 NXT Intelligent Brick (or similar sold through LEGO Education distribution)

"If a user wants to have a NXT Intelligent Brick replaced based on this quality issue, please ask to contact LEGO Consumer Service, contact information available on the web for your country. Please note that the display needs to be defect."

Steven has asked that if you think your NXT suffers from this problem, please check the battery first before contacting LEGO customer support, as similar issues are seen when the battery is running low on power. Only NXTs with a genuinely faulty display will be replaced.

Well, it may be worth asking about on a case-by-case basis, but don't expect it.
