Ouput from usb via custom firmware??

Hi I want to send values from the nxt out via its usb connection is it possible via normal firmware or do I need custom firmware? I believe its possible because the nxt sends values back via usb in bricx. There can be many uses for this like devoloping expliots for playstation 3 (There are many expliots that have been ported to arduino and ipod) (I wabt to port it to nxt)
