NXT-G 2.0 legal download

Is this an actual executable download? I've tried downloading the software in the past, but I got something I needed to run in a virtual CD drive, which didn't work at all. Is that what this is too?

This is a 'CD image', which you can either run on virtual CD software or burn onto a disk using something like ImgBurn.

Once on a disk you just run it like any other installation CD.

If you don't buy the MINDSTORMS hardware, the software is not much use.

An alternative approach to installing from the .iso image is to extract the contents to a folder and run the installer from there. (Programs such as 7-zip can do this, just try to open the .iso file in 7-zip in exactly the same way as a ordinary .zip file.)

And on a mac you can use disk mounter utility, just double click the iso. If you're on snow leopard, you'll need to use the patch ( here for instructions: http://mindstorms.lego.com/en-US/News/R ... ?id=351333 )
