Anonymous users are not permitted to search, is it done on purpose?

No, not done on purpose. It is a nice way to minimise DDoS attacks on the forum servers though. Is there a specific reason you need this?

I suppose many people do not want to setup a sourceforge account just to be able to make a search.
Also, I always make sure I have enough time before log in to phpBB forum, because once logged out it consider I have read all new posts. Sometime I really do not want to log in for that reason.
