EV3: controlling a robot via bluetooth on your phone

The iPhone "Commander" app has a section where it will let you create a custom control board for a robot. The interface is a little clunky but I like the idea.

What I want to do is build an interface on my phone that will let me send bluetooth commands to an EV3 robot. The Commander app won't let you do this though. Can you guys think of an app (iphone) that will send custom data via bluetooth? There has to be a way to do this...

Another approach would be to get a web server running on the EV3...then you could write a web interface to control the robot. That would be pretty cool.
