LEGO at TRU

I picked up TECHNIC set 8063 at a Toys R Us in Nashville yesterday. Cleverly named "Tractor with Trailer". At 1100 pieces it normally retails for $99.99 but it was on clearance for $79.98 and until October 14th TRU (here, at least) is running a 25% additional off any clearance item with a price ending in 8 or 0. That dropped the price from ~$80 to ~$60. This week they also have a 10% off all LEGO construction sets and a free Bricktober minifig with purchase over $20. So I was out the door at ~$56 with a free retro minifig "Imperial Soldier".

My TRU also had the yellow dump truck (8264 Hauler) on clearance along with 3 of last year's large Bionicle sets.

that's a great haul for under 60 bux...not sure if that kinda deal is available out in Seattle, but if it were, it would make me wish I hadn't spent all my b-day $.

Have you built it yet? Apparently it is one of the worst technic sets...

I don't know what makes a TECHNIC set bad or good. I've built the tractor and it seemed a lot like other TECHNIC sets I've built. I am not a good judge of its playability/complexity or anything like that. I like it and have seen some good reviews online. Brickset gives it 3.8 out of 5 bricks.

I mostly look at the technic sets as parts, so my "rating" on sets would be based off of how many special or unique parts are in the set, not how it looks or works/doesn't work.

I am in the same camp as well, "kitys are parts...". I at times build the kits and say to myself, I will not scrap this out, I will use it as dsiplay. BUT it seems in no time at all there is some bit I need and well, take one part leads to a few these and those before you know it it looks like a, " cash for a clunker technic truck".

But a sale on any Technic model is allmost allways a good deal. Looking at the parts in that kits seems a good mix of parts too. Those that have been doing this a few years or decades have seen how much prices have gone up too. These kits are getting more and more expensive. Large kits are running near 200$ they may have only about 1100 parts as well. So this is a very good deal.

The tractor with hauler was called a bad set because basically it was a re-edition of another set, simply adding the hauler, meaning that for a collector or great Technic fan it had very little interest. In addition the "original"set had a complement that could be attached to the output shaft of the tractor which in the set simply wasn't used - imagine a Technic set with a function that doesn't actually do anything. However, as a parts pack it is a fabulous set, and at that price... I'm checking TRU in my corner of the world tomorrow, but I doubt they have any special offers at all.

I see your point, and indeed, I buy sets just for their parts now, if at all (don't we love bricklink )
It didn't look that impressive as a parts pak for me, apart from the copious amount of panels, but why, oh, why did they have to be green, one of the rarest colours, pretty much non-existant in official LEGO technic sets and so you would have a hard time building a 'bot with a good colour scheme?
But technic for a good price is always good. Here in RipOffAustralia you wouldn't believe the lego techinc prices. the AU dollar is almost equivalent to the US dollar and everything is almost double the price. The NXT 2.0., at last check, was $450. I stopped buying sets here as soon as I saw their real prices. I now have them brought here from the US.

Yeah, in the Netherlands, the retail price for the NXT 2.0 set is 325 euro, which is roughly equal to $450 US. There are shops that sell them for less, though (260 euro). They are much cheaper in the UK, so some people just order them from there. In some other parts of Europe the price is closer to 400 Euro.
